Nickel-cadmium Batteries (NiCd) - NiCd is used where long life, high discharge rate and extended temperature range is important. NiCd batteries suffer from memory effect, and they must be completely discharged before recharging or else damage can occur Nickel-cadmium contains toxic metals that mature but has moderate energy density.


Nickel-metal-hydride Batteries (NiMH) - NiMH has a higher energy density compared to nickel-cadmium at the expense of reduced cycle life. NiMH is viewed as steppingstone to lithium-based systems. The cell phone batteries are made from non-toxic materials and are environmentally friendly lower environmental impact than NiCd batteries, due to absence of toxic cadmium. They also deliver a higher capacity in relation to their size and weight. This is an important and main feature that makes NiMH batteries attractive as consumers are not burdened by having to "service" their batteries by discharging it fully before recharging.


 Li-Ion Batteries (Lithium-Ion) - These batteries are quite new to the market and have the lowest discharge rating compared to Ni-Cad and NiMH batteries. They do not suffer from memory effect and is one of the most commonly used types of batteries in mobile phones today. They have an excellent power to weight ratio that makes them highly attractive to portable devices such as mobile phones, video cameras and digital cameras. Li-Polymer Batteries (Li-Pol) - This is relatively new and we are beginning to see more of these batteries appear in mobile phones today. They are considered as the best battery chemistry today for mobile devices due to their high capacity and low weight. Its unique construction performs in a same way to cobalt-based lithium-ion.Li-Polymer batteries do not suffer from “memory loss”. Lithium-ion polymer is not listed as a separate system.


Memory effect or lazy battery effect, is an effect of batteries that causes them to hold less charge. It describes one very specific situation in which certain NiCd batteries gradually lose their maximum energy capacity if they are repeatedly recharged after being only partially discharged. The battery appears to "remember" the smaller capacity. The sources of the effect are changes of the characteristics of the underused active materials of the cell. The term is commonly misapplied to almost any case in which a battery appears to hold less charge than was expected.
